Layla - Eric Clapton
Imagine waiting on the airport and your eye happens to land on a sign that reads:
"Scaramouche, Scaramouche, Will You Do the Fandango?"
Does you brain instantly starting filling in the tune?
Building on the foundation of my Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Tribute, I expanded this concept into a broader series of 40 artworks, releasing them in curated batches of ten. My goal was to visually translate the pure experience of listening. As Paula Scher famously noted, "Words have meaning, type has spirit."
The objective was to see if I can bake the DNA, era, and overarching soul of classic rock into the typography itself. By treating lettering as an illustrative medium, the goal was simple: a psychological trigger: a visual stimulus so evocative that upon reading the lyric, the viewer's brain automatically fills in the melody. Drawing inspiration from the typographic revolutions of the 1970s led by designers like Paula Scher, this collection is an exercise in utilizing text as the primary illustrative structure to create rich, nostalgic experiences that can be adapted to modern merchandise.
The primary goal was to test audience reception across the following strategic benchmarks:
An exploration of the deeper themes and motifs of individual songs, all while maintaining a uniform visual language across an expansive collection.
The Methodology—Uniformity and Variation: The challenge lay in exploring the language of typography while creating a unique visual perspective rooted to personal experiences with these songs. The solution was a unified illustrative style that remains completely agnostic of repeating typefaces.
The Organic Execution: To preserve the kinetic energy within the letterforms mirroring the emotional beats of the song, I drew thumbnails for the entire collection. By explicitly omitting AI workflows, the project retained an organic expression that cannot be replicated artificially. The design process was deeply immersive, utilizing the specific song's audio as a continuous reference to inform the weight, flow, and rhythm of the typography.
Thematic Soul: By treating typography as an active illustrative element, visual metaphors tied to the song’s narrative were seamlessly integrated into the letterforms. This approach invites the audience to explore the design, bridging the gap between functional graphic design and fine art, rewarding the viewer with hidden details upon closer inspection.

INSPIRATION
I always started where I feel most at home: bridging the physical and digital worlds. My initial drafts were born in a physical sketchbook before I expanded them through digital freehand in Photoshop with my Wacom tablet. It was crucial to me that the typography didn't feel sterile, but instead kept a raw, human, and kinetic energy.
I kept my creative flow deeply intentional: Sketch → Vector → Texture. I mapped out the overarching vision through swift, instinctual illustrations on paper first. From there, I took each individual piece and carefully nurtured it through focused digital iteration.
In Season 1 I explored the core foundation with clean, flat vectors. But for Season 2, I started adding layers of textures over those vector silhouettes to achieve that vintage, lived-in aesthetic I was craving all while preserving the crisp, high-resolution edges required for premium DTF apparel printing.
Market Impact & Cohesion: The meticulous yet organic, hand-crafted approach yielded exceptional market visibility. The collection successfully united 40 diverse musical narratives under one cohesive visual language, instantly capturing the attention of its target demographic: performing musicians, discerning collectors, and classic rock enthusiasts.
I used to listen to this song (Bohemian Rhapsody) and one of our core memories was singing the operatic section out loud. I'm not an ardent listener of these songs, but when I saw this T-shirt, I needed to have it! Love the design!
...and just like that, I found trivia on Scarborough Fair ... because, obviously, I listened to the song the min I saw the Tee. did you know this..? I certainly didn't.. makes the song so much more special..
The journey with this piece is far from over. For Season 3, I want to explore the following points:
